The Theological Concept of Political Ethics of Rahmatan Lil Alamin: An Analysis of Tafsir Al-Azhar and Tafsir Al-Misbah

Abstract:
The rise of identity politics in Indonesia's democratic landscape has reached a critical level, marked by the instrumentalization of religion, ethnicity, and social identity for political mobilization. This phenomenon has intensified social polarization, weakened cohesion, and shifted Islamic values from inclusive ethics to tools of political legitimacy. Against this backdrop, this study aims to examine the theological concept of political ethics based on rahmatan lil 'alamin through a comparative analysis of Tafsir Al-Azhar and Tafsir Al-Misbah. The research employs a qualitative design, using thematic Qur'anic interpretation (mawdu'i) combined with an interpretive-hermeneutic approach, to explore the ethical values embedded in the Qur'anic text and their socio-political relevance. The findings reveal that Rahmah functions as a comprehensive ethical framework encompassing justice, inclusivity, and social responsibility. Both tafsirs emphasize that political ethics must be grounded in universal compassion and collective welfare rather than exclusivist identity claims. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that integrating rahmatan lil 'alamin into political discourse offers a viable solution to mitigate identity-based conflicts and strengthen democratic morality in Indonesia
